Diabetes Care at Reliance Primary & Urgent Care

Diabetes is a chronic condition that causes problems with blood sugar and insulin levels. Our bodies rely on glucose to attain energy. When we eat food, our bodies transform the nutrients we get from food into glucose, which provides energy for our bodies. From there, the pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that absorbs and manages glucose levels.

People who have diabetes experience problems either making insulin or managing insulin levels, causing elevated glucose levels in the blood. Diabetes can occur in vastly different ways, including:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is an insulin-dependent condition. As an autoimmune disease, it causes the insulin-producing cells to be destroyed by the immune system, preventing the body from producing enough insulin to manage glucose levels.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: As the most common type, type 2 diabetes is a non-insulin-dependent condition resulting from either insulin resistance or the inability to produce enough insulin. As a metabolic disorder, this condition diminishes the effectiveness of the insulin-producing cells over time, causing problems with body weight, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes typically occurs during the third trimester but usually disappears after the baby is born. It’s caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy, as the growing demands of the fetus require more insulin than usual.

Diabetes is most commonly associated with complications including strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetic foot, glaucoma, and high cholesterol. Because of these risks, regular insulin injections, diet, and exercise. However, our Reliance Primary & Urgent Care team can provide annual checkups, wellness exams, and regular lab tests and offer care plans to help manage your diabetes.
